Ronald McDonald House, Evelina

Interior Design

Creating home away from home accommodation for families of sick children next door to Lambeth Palace.

Serving the Evelina London Children's Hospital, the Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust made a site available to RMHC adjacent the Grade 1 listed Lambeth Palace and Gardens and at the heart of its Conservation Area. The 59 bedroom house won a London Construction Award and was a Civic Trust and RICS Awards finalist.

Given the sensitivity of the site, stakeholder engagement was key. Our sympathetic design responds to the context in a contemporary way. Materials and features found on the surrounding buildings, such as Georgian window proportions, brick facades and stone detailing were incorporated and given a modern twist. 3D modelling from the outset allowed us to communicate this with stakeholders including impact on the surrounding buildings. Everybody was bought in from the beginning.

Driving RMHC's sustainability agenda, the house achieved BREEAM ‘Excellent’, EPC ‘A’ rating and a predicted 50% improvement on energy performance over Building Regulations requirements.

We are delighted with our flagship House which has already helped hundreds of families to stay together near their children in hospital. It was an ambitious project and we and our partners worked long and hard to bring it to fruition. Demand is acute for our services all over the country and we are pleased to be able to provide our support to one of the leading children’s specialist hospitals in London. Having a place to unwind away from the hospital makes a big difference to families at a stressful time, as well as easing the significant financial challenge of finding somewhere to stay close to their sick child.
