South Gate Named ‘Affordable Housing Scheme of the Year’

We’re delighted to share the news that the AEW designed South Gate, delivered by Contractor Casey for client One Manchester, has won ‘Affordable Housing Scheme of the Year’ at the Northern Housing Awards.
The aim of the awards is “to promote and celebrate innovative affordable housing providers, projects and services in the North that are helping to create great communities where people love to live.” we’re therefore delighted to see the scheme recognised in this way.
Our role on the South Street sites saw us design 8 new homes for affordable rent on one infill site and 27 homes on another in Openshaw, Manchester. The latter site comprised 12 shared ownership family houses and 15 contemporary bungalows.
With the end users of the bungalows to be those with dementia, these were designed using Housing our Ageing Population Panel for Innovation (HAPPI) principles. The homes sit around a secure shared courtyard and garden enabling residents to live independently whilst using the external space for recreation. Each bungalow features large, glazed windows to flood the living spaces with daylight and provide a strong visual connection with the raised beds, sensory planting and summer house in the garden. A varied colour palette aids memory and way finding.
The judges said South Street is “a wonderful, integrated generational scheme that really embeds the needs of residents from design through to delivery and management.”
Congratulations to all the winners!
