AEW is a member of the Architectural Technical Leads Group (ATLG), a forum for architects and designers to discuss technical issues, share knowledge and resources, and drive improvement in the UK construction industry.
Along with other ATLG members, we welcome the release of Phase 2 of the Grenfell Report and its recommendations for the design and construction industry. The ATLG have been discussing its contents and have now released an open letter in support of the recommendations of the Report.
The open letter is endorsed by 62 UK practices, they constitute over 20% of the AJ100 list – 22 practices, with over 2500 qualified architects.
We urge our industry and government to support the recommendations in the report by taking the actions in the open letter. The key actions in the letter are listed below.
- Strengthened Guidance for Clients
- Clear Gateway Guidance and Provide Adequate Resources for the Building Safety Regulator
- Transparency and Lower-Cost Availability of Safety Standards
- Update and Extend the Approved Documents and Manual
- Construction Products Information and Guidance
MD, Andy Rainford said of our support:
“As an RIBA and CIAT Chartered Practice, we take our responsibilities as an architectural practice extremely seriously.
“Since the Building Safety Act and associated changes to the Building Regulations came into force on the 1st October 2023, we have been working to strengthen and improve our knowledge, systems and procedures to ensure that we are equipped to meet the requirements of the legislation, including the new duty holder roles.
“This included extensive training for our entire technical team, with four Chartered Architects having subsequently demonstrated their knowledge, skills, experience and behaviours to be certified on the RIBA Principal Designer Register.
“We now call on the wider industry and the government to support the recommendations in the Grenfell Phase 2 Report and play their part in ensuring a safer future for all.”
